We’re suckers for big, bluesy voices here at Unrecorded, so when we first heard Susy K‘s impressive vocal range, we just knew that had to feature her. The Scottish singer and songwriter was raised in Edinburgh by opera singer parents, so it’s clear that the apple didn’t fall far from the tree in this family. However, rather than following in her parent’s classical footsteps, Susy K was drawn to the soulful and funky sounds of Stevie Wonder, Jill Scott, Mica Paris, and Chaka Khan to name but a few. That’s how this artist discovered her passion for soul music from an early age.
This singer really has honed her skills at producing bluesy tones, sing-speak verses, huge vocal thrills and a deep resonance that takes the listener one a journey that is as much technical and it is intuitive. We hear this display of vocal athleticism in Susy K‘s newest single ‘Workin”, which is the final track to be shared from the artist’s EP project, Hear It From Her. It’s a real empowering number about valuing your time after wasting so much of it on someone you’re into, but doesn’t even seem to notice it. You shouldn’t have to work so hard for someone’s love and affection, it should come easy if it’s true. Alongside the bold lyrics and even bolder vocals, empowerment is also felt through the lifting horn section, punchy percussion, retro keys and slinking bass line.
We’d really love nothing more than to walk into a cool little jazz bar and find Susy K up on the stage performing ‘Workin” for a crowd that would naturally be vibing on the dancefloor.
