Jett Jenkins is a truly one-in-a-lifetime artist hailing from the creative stomping ground of Brooklyn, New York. Her evocative music often conveys emotional and mental health struggles through the paradigm of our everyday life in this complex, modern world. She neither seeks to entirely soothe our woes or over-egg the emotional reality, instead Jenkins offers solidarity, empathy, and bloody good music. Her latest single, ‘Bite the Bullet’, is one such example of what this artist can offer.
Before we dive into the song, let’s hear from Jenkins herself about the motivation behind it:
“Bite the Bullet” is about pushing through difficult seasons of life. It’s about being proud of yourself, for just being on this earth and surviving. Holding your head up in the hard times, which might not have completely passed, but standing and staying. Staying to find something, anything.”
Known for slightly poppier approaches to songwriting, this new release strays into grittier territory, with plenty of 90s grunge motifs, although while still maintaining her penchant for substance over style. That is, Jett Jenkins‘ authentic and meaningful lyrics, as we hear in the track’s pivotal chorus, “I hope you know how proud. / I am you made it. / Pushing past a bullet. / Biting with your teeth. / Ready to implode. / When voices raising. / You are so unsure. / You’re so afraid of everything. / Searching for a heart of gold.” That final line within this compassionate chorus is a reference to Neil Young’s 1972 classic ‘Heart of Gold’, which for us also confirms Jenkins‘ identity as a bonafide music aficionado.
Elsewhere, the verses of ‘Bite the Bullet’ provide a brooding and steady backdrop to the artist’s bruised vocal delivery, surrounded by a deep bass groove, ticking percussion, and seesawing guitar. It’s an effective way to draw the listener while building anticipation for the explosive finale.
