For those who have never heard of lilac frog, who are they and what is their music about?
Hi, I’m Harri and I’m a 19-year-old producer and artist from the UK, thanks for having me and I’m really excited to share my music with you! ‘lilac frog’ is my current project, who is essentially a character who releases electronic-pop-oriented music with a focus on storytelling and songwriting. lilac frog’s music is authentic and honest, usually with a big focus on telling a story, which is all glued together by a specific quirky twist in the song’s sound that you’ll perhaps find a different producer or artist might not have chosen to do.
With a name as quirky as this, it’s designed to be both memorable and unique, which hopefully meshes well with the music I create.
What has been the most rewarding/ most enjoyable highlight of your career so far?
Actually starting the ‘lilac frog’ project was a pretty rewarding event in and of itself. I’d had lots of experience producing in different styles before, and lilac frog was my chance to bring it all together into a specific and cohesive sound, which I’ve kept up since. My first single under this alias – Vividity (which I made and released at 17) – went better than I could have imagined, with multiple blog features and playlisting off the bat, which was an incredible experience I am very grateful for. Since then, I’ve had the chance to collaborate with lots of talented musicians from all over the world to create my music, which I absolutely thrive off of, most notably with Nashville vocalist undy on ‘Reason to Stay’ which has garnered a large number of streams from all over the world. But watch this space as hopefully there will be some huge highlights to document in the near future!
What have been some major challenges in your music career so far?
Navigating the ever-evolving landscape of the music industry has been a fun yet challenging journey for me, especially as an indie artist trying to find their way and the audience who resonate with my music. Trying to find the right balance between maintaining my unique artistic vision and meeting the expectations of a growing audience is a tight-fitting puzzle, but this encourages me to stand out against the noise. There’s a huge number of emerging artists and content which deserves to be heard today, and staying true to my creative ideas while evolving and experimenting is a balance I have to get right, but when I manage to hit it with each song I put out, it’s a rewarding feeling to overcome that initial block, and also adds to my determination to keep pushing forward.
What are you grateful for right now in this moment?
At 19 years old, a few years after coming out of a local music college, it’s inspiring to witness the supportive community that has already grown around my music. Each step of this adventure, from the initial demos in my bedroom to the dynamic soundscapes that resonate with my listeners today is just a testament to the power of creativity and connection – and hopefully this will grow with new people who come across my music and decide to join me on this journey. From acing my studies at a local music college to gracing the playlists and pages of esteemed blogs, it’s so humbling to reflect on my journey so far!
Physical copies or streaming sites?
I love streaming services as much as everyone for the convenience and simplicity of them, but you just can’t beat having the vinyl of your favorite records on your shelf or in your hands.
What is your most played song of 2023 so far?
Currently, it’s ‘Hysteria’ by Spiritbox. I don’t make nor do I typically listen to metal music, but Spiritbox just does something to me, and I’m addicted, and I also can’t recommend their music enough!
A playlist you can’t get enough of?
I go through so many different moods and feelings that the playlists I have on repeat change a lot, but currently I have Spotify’s own curated playlist ‘Heart Beats’ on pretty much constantly when I’m gaming, or just doing anything online – it’s full of these pretty, ear-catching, dreamy electronic tracks and it’s also super inspirational!
A dream collaboration?
So there’s this artist I’ve been a huge fan of for a while named Mindme. They work with this music library that I’ve had my eyes set on for a while which I’d love to have the chance to contribute to in the future myself, but for a collaboration, getting to work with Mindme would be incredible. She has this uniquely dreamy voice that works with just about any style, and whilst not everyone might’ve heard of her, she has a steady number of streams and I can totally see why! Everything she creates is super catchy and addicting and I’d love to get the chance to create a song with her and merge our styles.
Lastly, what can fans expect from lilac frog for the rest of this year?
Throughout the upcoming months, I’m excited to unveil a series of fresh singles that delve into an eclectic array of styles and genres unique from what I’ve touched on so far (such as a more-than-subtle nod to the synthpop vibes of the 80s in one of these releases). This all leads up towards the end of the year – as it draws to a close, I’ll be debuting my first full-length album, ‘lilac pond’, which is a curated collection featuring many of the singles which have got me to this point so far. While I’ve been offering single drops so far, this upcoming album is set to immerse you in the entirety of lilac frog’s world and home, and I’m eagerly counting down the moments until its release!
