Drifting through ‘Japanese Dreams’ with Montpellier musician Frank Rabeyrolles

Earlier this year, we introduced you to the sublime artistry of Montpellier musician Frank Rabeyrolles with single ‘Beauty and Smile’. Putting aside his earlier Boat Songs project from which we unearthed the aforementioned gem, the multi-faceted creative is now working towards the release of new album, Minor Blue. Our first taste of that forthcoming record is ‘Japanese Dreams’, a track whose own somnambulist nature is befitting its title. Although the inspiration for the song was far from an invention of the mind, as Rabeyrolles had recently visited Japan and wanted to capture his experience through the way he know best – music.

The result is a drifting and minimalist soundscape that reflects this French traveller’s interaction with the country, from its rural landscapes to the bustling metropolises. What the artist found was a place that’s seemingly ethereal to his outsider’s perspective. Bordering on the realm of dream-pop, ‘Japanese Dreams’ escapes an exact definition as the song is so fluid and almost formless. The intricately weaving guitars meet the steady energy of the simple beats, creating a soothing atmosphere. The artist’s voice is tranquil with a subtle hint of reverberation accentuating the pleasant memories of his travels.

This single is another superb listen that transports you to a wholly different place. It also adds to the eager anticipation for the arrival of Frank Rabeyrolles‘ upcoming album, due to appear in February 2024.

You can listen to ‘Japanese Dreams’ in our Outsiders Club playlist.
