Could Cam Wilson be New Zealand’s answer to Ben Howard? Putting our first impression out there, we’ll let you be the ultimate judge of that once you listen to the indie-folk gem that is ‘Best of It’ from the Auckland-based singer and songwriter. One thing that is for certain is Wilson‘s ability to walk the fine line between quiet melancholy and smoldering optimism. As you’ll discover upon close listening to these heartfelt lyrics, ‘Best of It’ summarises the common human experience of feeling like control is slipping through your fingers. However, rather than expressing frustration or resistance, Wilson encourages you to “be the change,” meaning that with a little adjustment we can accept that no everything is in our control. After all, it’s okay to not be okay.
In keeping with the artist’s melodious and raw vocals, the track is largely organic in nature, with softly reverberated strings and gentle percussion creating a welcoming atmosphere. The naturalistic inspiration of the Tuscan mountain side where Cam Wilson‘s forthcoming EP first originated is present throughout the soothing layers of sound.
With The Time EP already on the horizon, ‘Best of It’ is a tempting insight into the emotionally intelligent, folk-tinged artistry we have to look forward to.
You can also listen to ‘Best of It’ in our Folk This Way and Shades of Pop playlists.
