‘Arranging Flowers’ is the invigorating opener to Sacha Mullin’s third album

Today, we’re thrilled to introduced Chicago-based singer, songwriter and musician Sacha Mullin who is making his first appearance on Unrecorded via the ear-catching studio album, Casino Wilderness Period. Produced by Todd Rittman, this record is Mullin‘s third solo endeavour and it’s one that platforms his immense voice, penchant for invigorating compositions, and thematic complexity. To open the door into this eight-track release, we’d like to dive deeper into the opening single ‘Arranging Flowers’.

As soon as this song starts there’s an immediate connection to the album’s title through an eerie echo of slot machines and casino games. The otherworld presence of chance, fate, desire, and risk sets the tone for Mullin‘s charismatic performance. Walking the line between dramatic pop balladry and avant-garde, jazz-infused rock, the artist creates a sonically arresting narrative that follows the highs and lows of life. Our favourite part of the track is the uplifting and soulful chorus, which first arrives around two minutes in. The gloomy strings and theatrical piano burst into uptempo activity in the form of lively percussion, dancing guitar notes and soulful backing vocals courtesy of Emily Bindiger. Mullin‘s voice really takes charge here as he sings about the value is failing and learning from our mistakes, no matter how many times or how long it takes. The song progresses in this ebb and flow pattern until the 3:35 minute mark when an ever grittier, more rock-propelled section ups the intensity once again. ‘Arranging Flowers’ really does capture the unpredictability of life, one that is so often dictated by luck.

A six minute track is certainly an ambitious choice, but Sacha Mullin doesn’t miss a step. Be sure to listen to the rest of Casino Wilderness Period, we promise you won’t be disappointed. And if you’re shopping around London’s Soho or Hackney for the holidays, keep an eye out for the physical copy.
