Here at Unrecorded, we live for discovering new bands and artists, whether it’s their debut single or they have an impressive discography already under their belt. In our world, it’s the newer, the better. One if those fresh faces to appear on our radar as of late is the Manchester-based indie troubadour JFT. This emerging musician only recently released his first track, to some impressive critical acclaim, so we’re hopping on the band wagon for his sophomore single, ‘A Hellenistic Romance’.
As the title suggests, JFT‘s evocative songwriting seeks to go beyond a typical love story by drawing on all the high drama of a Greek tragedy. There’s a chance it’s not going to end well, but the excitement and passion draws you in. To deliver such a hefty tale of romance, the artist digs into his local roots to unearth indie textures. The result is a vibrant sound, built on a complex combination of indie-rock melodies, psychedelic undertones and some dream-pop flourishes. They lyrics also speak to a search for deeper meaning. JFT sings in his laidback affect, “To be free, to make my honest mistakes, to believe, that all my dreams are godless.”
‘A Hellenistic Romance’ is equally nostalgic and timeless, reframing familiar sounds in this fresh new context. Now it’s just a waiting game to see if JFT can make his next release a hat-trick of indie gems.
