Portland’s The Mars McClanes challenge imposter syndrome in ‘Until You Lose’

Imposter syndrome is an inevitable part of the human experience, especially in this high-comparison world where a few scrolls of your phone can plummet you into a crippling sense of failure. We often forget that social media is often little more than a highlights reel that skips over the full and abrasive realities of life. Bringing a challenge to the imposter syndrome is Portland-based outfit The Mars McClanes whose latest track ‘Until You Lose’ looks past the societal mirage.

Packed with angular guitars, vibe-inducing drums, and plenty of fuzz, the band admit that this is the heaviest song they’ve made in a couple of years, but it’s a vibrant sound we fully welcome. It’s reminiscent of 90s alt-rockers, further transporting the listeners to a time when the nonsense of social media wasn’t a thing.

While the band deliver punch-drunk riffs, psych-rock grooves, and angsty lyrics throughout, you really can’t beat the catchiness of the chorus. Poking fun at the sycophantic fame-hunters, they sing “everyone wants to know you, until they do, everyone wants to love you, until you lose.” It’s clear that The Mars McClanes‘ outlook veers on pessimistic, but it also offer a different route to authenticity where you don’t need the approval of others to get through the day.
