Wotts complete their PETALS EP with high-tempo crescendo

Our favourite Ottawa duo Wotts has returned to brighten up our weekend once again with their thrilling new single ‘PETALS’. Following on from previously featured singles ‘blue’, ‘ALLO!’, and ‘WANNABE’, the pair demonstrate their versatility once again with this high-octane indie bop. Compared with other tracks, this is their fastest and arguably most dance-worthy yet, with a high-tempo rhythm coursing throughout its indie-pop veins. The percussion in particular here really jumps out from the speakers, wrapping the listener in a world of psychedelic, retro, and electronic sounds. It’s just the kind of track to put on when you’re feeling low and need an energy boost.

Speaking about their infectious new single, Wotts‘ guitarist and bassist Ricky 100 shares that, “It’s not that we haven’t poured our hearts into that element in our other songs, but we really pushed them to the limit here. I think the urgency of the drums really helps capture that unhinged, frustrated energy that comes with not knowing where you stand with someone.”

Inspired by the likes of Tame Impala and Pond, this track really lets loose with driving beats, layers of texture, dramatic guitars, and lots of sonic gems for those more keen-eared listeners out there. The production also really pushes any previously set down expectations of Wotts, which slightly blurs the borders of the vocals and instrumentation. Speaking of the vocals, the outfit provide a catchy string of lyrics that mirrors the track’s hedonistic feel. That sensation of escape and adventure rises up, sparking our own feeling of spontaneity.

‘PETALS’ is also the closing chapter to Wotts‘ newest EP, also titled PETALS, and it tells the story of unrequited love. However, this doesn’t mean that the duo are going quiet anytime soon, as the other band member Jayem explains, “We got a lot in the works and we’re excited to get it all out there. Expect a little of what we’re known for, but don’t be surprised if we throw a few curveballs.”

You can listen to ‘PETALS’ in our Electro Feels playlist.
