‘Spindle’ is the haunting and seductive introduction to Cate Von Csoke‘s forthcoming album, The Air Dangerous, due out in early 2025. It will arrive as the highly-anticipated follow up to her debut record, Almoon, which was a determinedly minimalist project recorded at Sonic Youth’s studio. Since that 2020 release, Von Csoke has been a little quiet, sharing just one single ‘Heart of Darkness’ in collaboration with Crimen. However, she’s clearly been keeping busy cooking up something special if ‘Spindle’ is anything to go by.
To keep us going through the long months ahead until the new album is out, the Brooklyn-based artist has unleashed this masterpiece of cool tones, mysterious lyrics, and beguiling production. This track stays true to Von Csoke‘s dreamy-yet-eerie style, which can be described as “desert folk”, and it’s true that her sound brings to mind the sense of awe and isolation of glancing out at a desert landscape at dusk. In this sense ‘Spindle’ provides an escape from the ordinary, challenging our perspectives of universal experiences of love, connections, and making tough decisions.
Speaking about the central themes housed within this ethereal track, Cate Von Csoke shares that, “Spindle is a falling in love song that explores the divine connection between the heart and the mind and the interplay that can be difficult to marry. The first single on the album and the first song I wrote for the album. The original demo was recorded in the pacific northwest on a rainy night after a dream day spent in the front seat of an old Cadillac. Driving through the pines into the lights of Portland past the beautiful Hollywood Theatre all the old lights glowing the streets. Falling in love. And on and on the spindle keeps on winding.”
Co-produced with Brian MacFadyen and mixed by MacFadyen and Bobby Tiemann, ‘Spindle’ is simply overflowing with a quiet luxury of new love on the West Coast. We’re on the edge of our seats to hear where this romantic evolution of Cate Von Csoke‘s sound will head next.
