In these colder, leaf-strewn, cosier months, we find ourselves looking for music to fit the vibe and Juliet Ayres‘ latest single ‘Perfect’ couldn’t fit the bill any better. Led by a hauntingly beautiful piano, this cuffing season anthem captures the all-consuming nature of romantic infatuation. With the cinematic backdrop, personal lyricism and raw emotion, ‘Perfect‘ sounds like a cosmic mix between Adele, Mitski and Radiohead. The layers of rich instrumentation gives off that James Bond soundtrack feeling that hints towards how high those stakes can feel in the midst of admiration and obsession.
Here the Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter opens up about the inspiration behind this theatrical new single, “I wrote this song in a state of obsession about a person I loved, where I saw them as an idol who could do no wrong in my eyes. I thought about this idolization and what it meant which is reflected upon in the bridge of “Perfect”, but other than that these were the dramatized thoughts going on in my head in that infatuated state about that person.”
Recorded at Valve Studios in Dallas, Texas, this cosy space further accentuates the intimate style of ‘Perfect’, which really benefits from the addition of live instrumentation, something which we don’t hear enough off in soulful pop ballads these days. The production, led by Casey Di Lorio, emphasises the lush piano and dramatic strings further adding to the impression of an epic yet bittersweet love story.
There’s no doubt that Ayres‘ approaches her music with a strong vision and full conviction, which has made the track so emotionally evocative and sonically intense. With her captivating storytelling and powerful voice, ‘Perfect’ highlights Juliet Ayres as a highly promising new name in the L.A. music scene.
