New York-based Finnish musician Janita reaffirms that she is the ‘Real Deal’

We’ve been loving new music from Finland lately, with emerging artists like Carla Aakre, Jonsjooel and Conchis providing us with a wide array of sonic diversity over recent months. Now we’re adding another name to our Finnish must-listens, Janita. For those in the know, you’ll recognise this name as the name behind the 2006 Billboard-charting cover of Depeche Mode’s ‘Enjoy The Silence’.

Now this New York-based career musician is back and ready to prove her longevity with ‘Real Deal’. Produced by the legendary Blake Morgan (Lenny Kravitz, Lesley Gore, David Cloyd), this track opens with a cool cadence that flows throughout the track. From the grungey undertones of the guitars and angsty melodies to the americana-titled chorus to the grooving bass hook, this track is a refreshing amalgamation of genres that produces an undefinable cinematic edge. This combination also lends itself to Janita‘s fluid vocals – velvety and commanding – which guide the listeners across this lightly sun-scorched landscape.

This really is such a quietly confident track, one that doesn’t feel the need to draw attention to itself; there’s no gaudy crescendo or self-gratifying breakdown. Janita only gives you the good stuff. You can’t help but going back to this one for repeat listens and moreover you won’t be able to resist the urge of singing “we are the real deal” along with this impressive artist.

If you’re equally hooked by this expansive, groove-laden track then you’ll be happy to know that ‘Real Deal’ is the tantalising prelude to Janita‘s forthcoming tenth studio album, Mad Equation, due to release in March 2025.

You can also listen to ‘Real Deal’ in our Outsiders Club playlist.
