It’s still very early into 2025 but we’re already unearthing some absolutely stunning sonic gems that have us predicting a seriously good year for new music. One of those early finds is ‘Struck Gold’ the newest single from Santa Barbara band Plastic Harpoons who combine timeless sounds of indie-folk, heritage americana, and dreamy indie-rock to create a sound that radiates the charm of a sun-soaked California afternoon.
Undeniably nostalgic, ‘Struck Gold’ nods to classic rock and folk traditions through the band’s lush instrumentation, making the perfect setting for frontman Taylor Casey’s emotive vocal delivery. Equal parts intimate and stage-ready, acoustic and electric guitars intertwine seamlessly, offering a warm, textured soundscape that complements its reflective yet romantic lyrics. These lines of melodic poetry capture the joy of self-discovery and the importance of embracing your true self, a sentiment that resonates deeply. Interestingly, this track was written five years ago by Casey and Ryan Peitzke, but it hasn’t lost any of that rustic, out-of-time charm.
With production from Bear Erickson, ‘Struck Gold’ is an artful balance between that folky warmth and indie-rock expansiveness that commands the luscious five minutes and twenty seconds of this track. Ultimately, this song is reflective of Plastic Harpoons‘ intuitive process, from the unfiltered songwriting through to unrushed recording; there are few bands that could pull off such an atmospheric track these days. It’s definitely a promising glimpse into what we can expect next from this band and we’ll be waiting for when they drop another golden nugget.
