Towards the end of last year, Leeds’ tour-de-force about-faces (Sennen Ludman, Joseph Schofield, Danielle Capstick, Nigel Ngwenya and Cormac Connolly) popped up on our radar with their charismatic single ‘Cinematic and Chrome’. Now, this hotly tipped band is back with another thrilling earworm, titled ‘Too Old For Fun’. Without giving our age away, this track is incredibly nostalgic with its mid ’00s riotousness that brings back memories of tearing through the town on too much cheap vodka. By the same token, this nostalgia brings a sharp contrast to the realities of getting older and leaving behind that youthful chaos… or perhaps we can make the choice not to.
From the very first chord, ‘Too Old For Fun’ explodes like a confetti cannon of jangly guitars and an irresistibly punchy percussion. It instantly induces a devil-may-care attitude and a reckless attitude typically attributed to those on the cusp of adulthood. It has such a British, and specifically northern English sound, with shades of Sam Fender’s anthemic storytelling and Blossoms’ infectious hooks. It’s an all too needed reminder that fun has no expiration date.
Lyrically, it’s a love letter to wild nights and messy friendships, as lead singer Ludman shares: “Inspired by stories passed down from previous generations, a mix of truth and exaggeration. It’s an ode to youth, capturing fleeting moments, and realising that today’s adventures will one day become the memories we share with the next generation.”
With its soaring melodies and a chorus made for shouting at the top of your lungs, playing ‘Too Old For Fun’ is like swapping out your batteries. It’s a jolt to the system that’ll have you reliving those indie sleaze days in no time.
