Most of us will be familiar with the saying “dance like nobody’s watching.” It’s often doled out as a piece of advice or a tired clichĂ© that’s supposed to encourage a sense of personal liberation. Words are one thing, but action is entirely another. Los Angeles’ Matya takes this guidance literally for her vivacious new single ‘Night Light’, which is all about discovering a new perspective.
Built on a shuffling samba rhythm and slinking bass line, this track is a mellifluous mix of disco, soul and pop that sounds like a cosmic mix between Sabrina Carpenter, L’ImpĂ©ratrice and Patawawa. Those funky grooves might be the first thing to pull you in but what will keep you there in Matya‘s dreamy vocals promising all the “shimmer, shimmer” of a night on the town. The result is infinitely catchy and irresistibly danceable.
The track is accompanied by a music video filmed in the heart of Paris which sees Matya taking the role of a performer, stage-perfect but let loose on the streets of the glamourous French capital. Centered in a limelight, the artist performs for the sake of inspiration alone; pure creative expression. You really get that sense of joy and freedom through Matya‘s fluid movements and kitsch gestures.
‘Night Light’ is a significant change of pace from last year’s release ‘Nobody’s Home’, which is an impressive display of Matya‘s versatility and we can’t wait to see what creative adventure she embarks on next.
