Love is probably the most enduring, universal and most written about theme in music. It’s easily accessible to the listener and stokes the embers of creativity on the side of the writer, and yet at the same time it can feel like there’s surely nothing more to say on the matter. This had previously been the experience of London-based artist AUNCE (pronounced Aunts/Arnts), who herself states that “I don’t usually write “love songs”.” However, a reason that love proves to be such a recurring songwriting topic is because each person’s involvement with the emotion is so nuanced and unique.
AUNCE explains her changing perspective at the time of writing her latest song: “At the time of writing Silver Sun I was moving through a shift in understanding love – as something that is and will always be part of us, or is us. Sometimes, it gets lost and buried beneath the noise and conditioning of life. Things, people, places come into our life and awareness that remind us of this love.”
Perhaps this changes is why ‘Silver Sun’ has such a special quality; there’s a subtle undertone of uncertainty as AUNCE cautiously approaches this new aspect of vulnerability.
AUNCE continues to muse on the songwriting process: “I’m probably not alone in admitting that in the past I have closed it down, pushed it away, denied it. But around the time of writing, I was overwhelmed with a want to generate more and more of it. And it grows like a very warm light from within. So, the song is a love song written to anything we truly love – oneself, a place, another – and a reflection on how generating love transforms us, our bonds with those people, things and places around us, and changes our perception of our world.”
The song itself is delicate yet resonant, with a more stripped-back sound than is typical for AUNCE. Centered around an intimate piano arrangement, the tension between resisting love and surrendering to its life transforming power is felt throughout the dreamy, intricate textures. Her baritone vocal sweeps across the sonic canvas with gentle strokes of emotional sincerity.
‘Silver Sun’ radiates with the idea that love is something innate. It may at times feel lost, buried beneath the noise and chaos of life, but it can always be found again if we search within.
