Musicians can be some of the most resilient people as they often have to push through creative droughts, industry push-backs, and other myriad obstacles that seem to get in the way of creating and sharing music . New to us, although definitely not new to the scene, one artist who represents determination is Hybrid Kid (aka Danny Lloyd). Based in the creative hub of Brighton, Lloyd has previously released two albums and numerous EPs, always staying true to his off-kilter, genre-blending sound. New single ‘Cry’ expands this sonic universe with an unexpected acoustic take on psychedelic, garage-rock motifs.
Recorded amongst the tranquil nature of the South Downs National Park, ‘Cry’ permeates through the calm with quirky, hook-laden melodies, laidback rhythms, hypnotic fingerpicked guitar and stepping bass grooves. Through the swirling soundscape, Lloyd explores how it’s possible to turn life’s disappointments into a source of strength. Those frequent bursts of passionate vocals propels that vital message of vulnerability and perseverance. Overall, the textural richness and moving lyrics create an atmosphere introspective and uplifting in its own unique way.
With ‘Cry’, the one-man band Hybrid Kid continues to push boundaries and express himself with a rarely seen freedom that makes his garage-rock sound so authentic.
