Julianna Joy burns bright on ‘The Year I Lived as You’

Recently, we got to know rising talent Julianna Joy with an On The Record feature where she left us with the incendiary statement, “spite and anger are as good a fuel as gasoline.” Swiftly following on from the unmissable release ‘GOLDSTAR’, the Los Angeles artist is back with ‘The Year I Lived As You’.

Once again, Joy‘s biting lyricism and unfiltered perspective shine through. In fact, this new song started out as a raw and cathartic poem, which was transformed into this striking indie-pop gem. While there’s several perceptible pop influences from Charli XCX’s summer soundtrack BRAT to Taylor Swift’s open-hearted songwriting to The 1975’s distinctive guitar work, the core of this new track is all Julianna Joy.

That dark-pop production and indie-rock instrumentation creates the ideal sonic environment for the moody verses simmering with introspective lyricism. You can’t help but be captivated by the intoxicating mix of heartache and defiance that by the end puts to rest a painful part of this artist’s life journey.

Like everything we’ve heard from this artist so far, ‘The Year I Lived As You’ is bold, unflinching and deeply personal. There are songwriters with many more years of life under their belt who can’t fathom the expressiveness that Joy pours into every song. More than one to watch, Julianna Joy is one to remember.
