Budapest-based artist Дeva has cast a unique spell over us with her single ‘Kis Kece’, featured on her recently released album Avar. What’s so special about her music is the way she breathes new life into traditional Hungarian folk by infusing those timeless sounds with her trademark mystical electronica. Furthermore, the collaboration with BALADI enhances the production; a rich blend of pulsating rhythms, subtle percussive accents, and hauntingly ambient textures.
This highly original musical expression is also brought to life with an atmospheric music video. Unfolding like a ritualistic dream sequence, cloaked figures dance through mist-laden forests; their movement physically embodying the emotional weight of ‘Kis Kece’. Both the song and the video also reflect wider themes in Дeva‘s album: liminality, spirituality, clarity, culture, and confusion.
While we highly recommend that you go and check out Avar, this single is certainly a standout moment on the record. It’s a poignant reminder of the folk heritage that anchors Дeva‘s forward-thinking sound. As such ‘Kis Kece’ is both reverent and revolutionary.
