Water Street is a Blairstown, New Jersey based collective who combine their americana roots with rock, pop and indie motifs to create a truly adventurous sound, as you’ll hear in ‘The White Rabbit’. Lifted from the outfit’s EP, Alone In A Crowded Place, this single conveys the disorientating fast-paced nature of modern life.
There’s a restless energy to ‘The White Rabbit’ designed to relay that sense of anxiety and stress our daily lives can conjure up. On the instrumental side, the track’s layered arrangement builds momentum from the guitar riffs to the keyboard melodies to the tight percussion. This sense of anticipation pairs well with the emotional lyrics, performed by Dave Paulson, which walk that line between personal introspection and universal relatability.
As the band’s lead vocalist describes: “The White Rabbit is about keeping up with the motion of the world around you. It feels like everything else around you is always moving, even when you aren’t. Everyone is part of this play, a machine that just kind of seems to function on its own. And that can sometimes be really daunting. If you don’t keep pace with everything going on around you, you start to fall behind. It prevents you from being present and in the moment.”
Produced by Tyler Ripley, ‘The White Rabbit’ is packed with poetic imagery, dynamic instrumentation and the band’s collective chemistry. It also sets the tone for the rest of the EP, which showcases their vibrant, genre-blending approach to songwriting. The kinetic energy in ‘The White Rabbit’ may have been inspired by the daily rat-race (or should we say, rabbit-race), but one can’t help but relate the track’s sound to Water Street‘s uncontainable drive and authenticity.
