AUNCE’s ‘Zoo Friend’ invites deeper connection with the natural world

We previously came across AUNCE (pronounced Aunts/Arnts) via her tender and introspective single ‘Silver Sun’, which explored a facet of love as a subtle empowerment to be discovered within. Now, the London-based artist returns with ‘Zoo Friend’, another emotionally resonant song that this time turns the lens outwards. If ‘Silver Sun’ was about rekindling the warmth within, then this new release is about recognising the soul in the world around us, especially animals and plants.

‘Zoo Friend’ unfolds gradually; it’s unrushed and without force. This steady pace allows listeners to slowly sink into the floating textures and mellow melodies that have been carefully constructed here. These soft sounds dovetail nicely into AUNCE‘s poetic and purposeful lyrics, which she delivers with a sage serenity.

Noticeably more pop than previous work, this track displays AUNCE‘s skilled versatility as she takes those indie-pop motifs and adapts them to her own unique style. Not only does she invite the listener to reconsider our connection with non-human life, but she also provides another stunning dimension to her sonic universe for us to lose ourselves in. Sparse yet intimate, clear yet hazy, grounding yet otherworldly – ‘Zoo Friend’ is the gift that keeps on giving.
