Inspiration can come from anywhere; literature, art, music, or (in this case) film. In new single ‘Love & Passion’, Micah Rose-Trespeuch weaves together cinematic tropes to tell us his own story as the metaphorical beaten-down fighter, who despite getting beaten down can always find the strength to get back up and keep going. This narrative is also a snapshot of the songwriter’s upcoming concept album, Coughing Up Blood.
Before we dive into the track, Rose-Trespeuch explains how these themes offer a parallel to his own life experience: “The core concept is inspired by the tv/film trope where the protagonist is beaten down, coughs up blood, wipes it off their lip, gets up and keeps fighting. There’s additional symbolism of trying to cough out the toxicity that’s taken root inside. I found that within the moments of silence intrusive thoughts would bombard me and keep me knocked down. It was in this silence that the music of this album was born. Love & Passion is one of the more energetic tracks that balances punchy jazz piano with melodic vocal harmonies with a huge ramp up to a big finish.”
Built on a punchy jazz piano and layered with powerful vocal harmonies, the track fuses the raw intensity of musical theatre with the introspection of indie songwriting. These two worlds conjoin to produce a gritty, heartfelt and persistent rallying cry.
What also adds to this track’s polished yet authentic feeling is its own interesting journey. ‘Love & Passion’ was written a decade ago in the fresh wake of heartbreak and so recently those bedroom demo recordings were resurrected with the addition of Gaetan Allard‘s percussion and Julien Baraness‘ production. This collaborative process has breathed new life into those original raw emotions.
‘Love & Passion’ is a tantalising insight into Micah Rose-Trespeuch‘s upcoming album; it’s an explosive and gripping soundtrack perfect for our playlists as well as the silver screen.
