Send Me Flowers’ ‘In My Head Today’ conveys inner turmoil with fragile intensity

From the floral capital of the world Amsterdam, we have new music from the suitably named Send Me Flowers. This alt-folk collective delivers a quietly powerful single ‘In My Head Today’, which takes the tried-and-true introspective narrative to a whole new level with this intimate stream-of-consciousness approach. Led by Iris van Dijk‘s seemingly translucent and ephemeral vocals, this song is a tender meditation on the disconnect one can feel between your temporal inner life and visceral reality.

The production is spare yet intentional, with a warm, slow-building piano line which sets the tone for this comforting, personal soundscape. Subtle textures bloom around van Dijk‘s disarmingly fragile voice, which conveys a creeping intensity in each and every word. It captures an inner turmoil, one that’s barely detectable to those around you; where you’re trying to make peace with the past without showing your feelings to the world. It’s truly an introvert’s experience, sensitively handled through this understated, poetic and emotionally raw single.

If you’re prone to overthinking, you’ll most likely find solace in ‘In My Head Today’. It’s also a tantalising preview of Send Me Flowers‘ upcoming mini-EP, set to appear this summer.
