Following MatAre‘s pleasingly hazy dream-pop single ‘Attach Your Memories’, the Atlanta-based artist is back with ‘That’s What People Do’. While some musicians find their lane and happily settle into that, this second track has come as a complete sonic surprise from MatAre. From the very beginning, we’re struck by the gutsy, scorched and raw soundscape derived from the darkwave and Russian doomer scenes.
Recorded in the oxymoronic tropical setting of Sarasota, Florida, this track carves out a shadowy void in time with serrated precision. It’s equal parts cathartic and indulgent, especially thanks to the cosmic fusion of analog and electronic percussion. Running alongside the pressing drums, the vocals veer between grumbled speech and almost shouting; both styles work together to deliver a stark sense of urgency. MatAre‘s lyrics shake off apathy with a rebellious flair, one drawn from his authentic use of rage and despair. This unrelenting and unapologetic atmosphere pulls easy comparison to the likes of The Cure, Pond or Depeche Mode.
Turning to the song’s political motivations, MatAre explains: “My country and its people worked so hard for progress and human rights and then it feels like it is being stripped back away from the lesser fortunate people very slowly.”
‘That’s What People Do’ is the second single to be revealed from the upcoming album Extinction Burst. It not only expands MatAre‘s sonic horizons, but it propels the forthcoming record’s narrative even further offering a tempting insight into what’s sure to be a thought-provoking listen.
