Shimmering with vibrant guitars, understated piano and clipped percussion, ‘Skyrocket’ is the expressive new single from London five-piece Sons of Martha. It’s a slice of jangly rock-pop that brings to mind late summer nights in the city, walking under the street lights, appreciating your place in the world. If Real Estate, The Shins or Alvvays are your cup of tea, then do stick around as ‘Skyrocket’ offers something familiar yet quietly distinct.
We especially love how this track balances tension and release, which creates a dynamic sense of movement that reflects the wider theme of restless optimism. As the band’s frontman Josh Beach puts it: “This one came from a place of optimism and restlessness. It’s about that magnetic pull toward something new.”
This idea of waiting for that spark is not only conveyed by the lively, melodic instrumentation, but also with the pensive lyrics. Lines like, “we talked about it, thought better of it, it’s not as easy as it appears”, meditates on the in-between; the words yet to be spoken; the future yet to be realised. What’s so special about ‘Skyrocket’ is that it doesn’t strive to find the answers; there’s a certain comfort in leaving those thoughts unfinished. By the end of ‘Skyrocket’, the instrumentation leaves an emotional imprint which will stay with the listener long after.
