Today, we’re excited to introduce you to Maryland-based outfit LunaRover who have just released their second single ‘Fountains’. This first impression is one of shimmering synths, warm nostalgia, power-pop melodies and modern indie production. It’s a stellar reflection of the chemistry between longtime collaborators Kevin Rieth and Ben Pelletier who dip into a deep well of the musical past for inspiration. With influences stretching from The Beatles to Tears For Fears to M83, this decades-hopping sonic creation carries echoes from these pop greats, giving ‘Fountains’ a timeless feeling.
As with some of our go-to favourite tracks, ‘Fountains’ was written in the aftermath of heartbreak and Rieth‘s lyrics reflect that internalised journey from pain and regret to healing and hope. The chorus especially has that sense of hard-won optimism with the line “And I, I’m ready for you.”
This truly is a listen with layers. From the personal narrative to the retro influences to the duo’s use of unique instruments and sounds. We challenge you to pick out the reed organ (bought for $10 at a thrift shop), the percussive vibraphone, or even quindar tones, which are these obscure beeps recorded from American space missions.
LunaRover readily display their love for quirky textures and relatable storytelling with this notable new release.
You can listen to ‘Fountains’ in our Shades of Pop playlist.
