‘Parabellum’ is Maria Deirisarri’s defiant alt-folk statement

Today, we’d like to introduce you to the talented songwriter Maria Deirisarri, a notable new voice in the alt-folk sphere. Her new single ‘Parabellum’, featuring Corey Kilgannon, could very well be a breakthrough moment for this emerging talent.

Written the night before recording and captured in just one take, Deirisarri‘s voice stands at the forefront of this track emphasising a sense of honesty and urgency. Wrapped up in a charming indie-folk shimmer, it’s a powerful statement of standing on business following a break-up. To cement her point, the polyglot incorporates the Latin phrase “si vis pacem, para bellum” (if you want peace, prepare for war), which is a clear, direct and unflinching warning.

This concept is even more poignant against the sparse arrangement of four instruments which whisper, rather than shout, in the background. This acoustic subtlety could easily come across as something floating and intangible, but the inclusion of candid studio chatter grounds this track in reality. This unfiltered moment is a reminder of the very real connection this song has to Deirisarri‘s personal life. In this way, ‘Parabellum’ is a cathartic release that allows this songwriter to draw a line between her current self and the past.

As Deirisarri states: “There are some songs that come to you out of nowhere, when in reality, you’ve been working towards writing them your entire life. Parabellum is one of those songs for me.”

It’s truly a profound and vulnerable narrative on heartbreak and the defiant response that some of us may experience. With Maria Deirisarri‘s upcoming EP, Si Vis Pacem, there’s more than a few reasons to keep this rising artist on your radar.
