Saliva Birds’ ‘Lost Cause’ roars through post-breakup wreckage

Formed in the ancient backstreets of York back in 2022, Saliva Birds is an impressive four-piece who subvert the mid-life crisis stereotype with this cathartic, invigorating and original project. As they say, the proof is in the pudding, and that exactly what you get with their newest single ‘Lost Cause’. This hook-laden anthem is an authentic tale of putting off the inevitable – that is, the end of a relationship already long gone.

You might be surprised to hear that this blistering indie-rock track was originally written as an acoustic number. Later it was developed into a full-band affair where the quartet’s instincts for grunge-laden guitars, gritty vocals, restless guitars and distorted production were put to full use. Those driving rhythms are especially effective in creating a sense of momentum; it’s like a rollercoaster heading to the unavoidable drop. That comes quickly with the dizzyingly carefree chorus with its ironic “sha la la” sing-along moment.

Between those surfy vibes and rocky textures, the band carves out a space to dive into that post-breakup daze where you pivot between disillusionment and self-awareness. At points, their sarcastic, tongue-in-cheek lyrics give way to the emotional heaviness that’s poured into the earthy garage-rock motifs.

It’s clear that no cause is ever truly lost, because it’s not about pity or self-destruction, it’s about the journey back to the self. With ‘Lost Cause’, Saliva Birds provide that shoulder to lean on and even if you’re not going through heartbreak right now, we highly recommend cranking up the volume on this one.
