From Science Is Fiction‘s upcoming debut album No Future, we have ‘Sea of Love II’ to dive deep into. As you’ll discover, it’s a mesmerising alt-pop number that centres around a looping, hymnal lyric, “the sea will wince with pain and crash, the wind will cry a song of sorrow”, which pulls the listeners into this symbolic, swirling daydream.
Far beyond your expected indie-pop track, this poetic vignette creates a pattern of tension and release with shimmering guitars, steady drums, pulsing bass and hovering vocals. This purposeful arrangement is intentionally repetitive as to reflect the inevitability of life’s ebb and flow. It’s an understated soundscape that’s the perfect backdrop for the quietly resigned yet powerful narrative.
Continuing on those themes of repetition, cycles and patterns is a captivating music video, directed by Aaron Dunn, who regularly works with the band. The insightful visuals focus on vocalist Pavan Singh who wanders around an underground parking garage, as an eerie imitation of an urban purgatory. Despite all the routes he takes, he always ends up where he began. Even when our protagonist finally finds a way out of that concrete maze, he’s faced with the vast Canadian wilderness which presents its own imposing, claustrophobic challenge.
The pursuit of freedom in ‘Sea of Love II’ offers no easy resolution, but rather it’s about the journey and the discoveries made along the way. Kaleidoscopic and cathartic, this single could very well be the core of Science Is Fiction‘s forthcoming record. It’s safe to say that we can’t wait to see how the rest of this story unfolds.
