There’s a beautiful fragility to the fleeting friendships, relationships and connections that we make throughout this journey we call life; in the moment, they feel so tangible and yet after-the-fact they dissipate into a mirage-like memory. Seattle artist Shelita captures these delicate threads in her new single ‘Fade’, which was made in collaboration with Lamar Van Sciver and Bellringer.
From the very first moments we were reminded of FKA twigs’ fairy-like electronica, with those spacious synths, fluttering beatwork and airy textures. Combining indie-pop and alt-R&B, this avant-garde experimentation flows with a seamless fluidity, capturing the natural, yet uncontrollable, passage of time. As the track progresses, it moves towards a soaring momentum in the chorus, charged by Shelita‘s gliding vocal hooks dipped in a subtle R&B atmosphere.
Balanced between a polished sheen and organic intuitiveness, this pensive track contains a potent duality where those aching lyrics stand beside a dynamic production. In lines like, “this could be the last time we see each other. We fade out, we fade in, but come on in,” Shelita meditates on the bittersweet poignancy of cherishing a connection before it inevitably slips away.
‘Fade’ is an essential listen for anyone needing reassurance in the wake of loss, regret and nostalgia. What’s more, this forward-thinking and emotionally resonant single is a taste of Shelita‘s upcoming album, Into the Depths. We can’t wait to dive in.
