A few months back we introduced you to the catchy indie-rock sound of Leazes with their summer-ready single ‘Sun’s Out’. At the other side of the season, the Geordie quartet have returned with another burst of youthful vigor in ‘Melissa In Action’, an exciting new track that strikes a balance between British indie nostalgia, fresh lyrical wit and punchy, anthemic hooks.
This track arrives after a string of sold-out hometown shows and you can really hear that live energy in this whirlwind of bright guitar riffs and driving rhythms that underpin this relatable narrative of early love. Led by Joe King’s buoyant vocal delivery, ‘Melissa In Action‘ transports listeners into the chaos, melodrama and excitement of teenage love, infatuation and heartbreak. The vibrant, extroverted sound really does convey the all-consuming nature of relationships in our formative years, which on reflection just makes up a chapter of our lives, but in the moment, it feels like everything. This experience is one that most of us have had and the inclusion of a nod to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem ‘There was a little girl’ further grounds ‘Melissa In Action‘ in that universality.
Produced by SugarHouse Productions (Corella, Viola Beach) and mastered by Grammy-nominated engineer Robin Schmidt (The 1975, Sam Fender), ‘Melissa In Action‘ is arguably an even more elevated sound than we’ve heard before from Leazes, yet their raw indie zeal is absolutely unmistakable. It’s just tailor-made for festival crowds who want to feel seen and yell about it at the top of their lungs. It’s refreshing, authentic and exhilarating. Only one question remains, can the guys do it again?
