Madchester spirit with a Dutch twist come together in Lemon’s ‘Maybe It’s You’

On first listening to Lemon‘s new single ‘Maybe It’s You’, it’s not immediately apparent what this song’s theme is. With the free-flowing psychedelic undertones and swaying alt-rock rhythms, you’d probably be surprised to discover that this Amsterdam four-piece are exploring the fall-out of a relationship’s end with all its confusion, messy feelings and a healthy dose of optimism.

As the band themselves state: “Who’s to blame when a relationship strands? Is it him? Is it her? Is it them? Does it matter? If it no longer works there is no longer a relationship. As the lyrics put it “I don’t care if it’s me or you, let’s just admit that we are through.”

Lemon marry their stereotypical Dutch honesty with a late 80s, early 90s sonic palette inspired by the Madchester scene, known for producing bands like The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and Inspiral Carpets. You can certainly hear that starry-eyed psychedelic haze right throughout ‘Maybe It’s You’, yet those nostalgic motifs are reframed in the modern-day thanks to the warm-yet-crisp production. It all works together to transform that blunt directness one reaches at the acceptance of the end into a groove-laden, swaggering celebration of life – in all its phases.

As their ninth song release of 2025, ‘Maybe It’s You’ is a thoroughly confident chapter in Lemon‘s year-long project which will see one new track each month. With the autumnal change happening all around them in The Netherlands, this song takes the concept of transition and conveys it with a refreshing clarity. It arrives as a reminder to let go of the past, to brush off the bitterness and to make peace with it all. After all, it’s easy to feel a lightness while soaking in the strutting guitar lines, subtle alt-pop hooks and fluid bass lines that Lemon have summoned up with a casual ease here.
