Following the shimmering debut ‘Blue Jeans’, Filipino-Australian artist ALEXIS shares new single ‘HATE IT HERE’, which leans further into vulnerability by confronting identity, self-acceptance and the messy contradictions of growing up. While the lyrics voice insecurities with raw honesty, the production pulses with vibrant energy and this duality creates a track that’s both cathartic and irresistibly catchy.
Blending elements of pop, synth-pop, indie-pop, and pop-rock, ‘HATE IT HERE’ has the immediacy of Olivia Rodrigo or Conan Gray while still carving out a distinct sound that’s entirely her own. The track was born out of a 2023 songwriting camp in Bali, where ALEXIS collaborated with Murphi Field, Sally Chatfield, Oliver Kindred and Tyler Murray. Murray’s influence, in particular, helped unlock what ALEXIS calls her “true sound”, by striking a balance between radio-ready polish and intimate storytelling.
To support ALEXIS‘ interaction with personal identity the cover art of ‘HATE IT HERE’ shows the artist wearing a traditional Filipinana blouse, a powerful nod to her heritage and the tension between belonging and discovery. With its emotional honesty and infectious hooks, this single makes a convincing case for ALEXIS to be categorised as an exciting emerging voice.
