Since making their debut in 2022, Brighton collective MOOD INC. have been steadily delivering a string of lofi gems perfect for late-night listening. Their latest twilight track is ‘Let Go’, an intimate soundscape of laidback soul, subtle indietronica, melodious indie-pop and alt-R&B textures. This slick production takes the listener behind that velvet curtain of our mind where unspoken desires and nostalgic memories linger.
From the first few notes, ‘Let Go’ radiates warmth with layers of floating synths and understated beats creating an atmosphere that seems suspended in time. MOOD INC. invites the listener to pause for a moment and cherish it before it slips away. However, it’s not just about relaxing here, there’s an emotional core to dig into. Hushed vocals carry a resolute yet melancholic tone, reminiscing about a fleeting romance. It’s that sense of surrender and vulnerability that really makes ‘Let Go’ such a powerful listen.
Each member has contributed to the intricate sonic palette here, acting more like a cooperative of individual musicians rather than a singular band. As such, the trio pulls on their own influences from Jai Paul’s extroverted production to Jungle’s infectious grooves to Jamie xx’s deft beatwork, and it’s this confluence of personal styles that makes the distinctly MOOD INC. sound.
It’s true that we can’t control the future and the message in ‘Let Go’ is very much about letting go of that falsity. By leaning into vulnerability and uncertainty, perhaps we can come to appreciate the present moment unfolding before us.
