‘Over My Head’ is our first interaction with Swiss indie duo Melting Reeds and it’s safe to say that we’re already a firm fan. This track sits somewhere between emotional restraint and burning catharsis as the pair navigate themes of grief and human fragility. These musicians’ straight-forward approach further amplifies every emotional nuance; evoking the aftermath of a rupture; the quiet unravelling that follows after a loss.
From the spiking psych-rock guitars to flushed lo-fi textures to flowing indie-pop melodies to the scintillating synths, ‘Over My Head’ walks the line between composure and collapse. It’s grounded by a gently pulsing percussion, which helps to draw listeners into the rumbling, swirling and quietly chaos. Those powerful vocals are determined throughout, but they don’t overreach or try to force a feeling, it’s pure authenticity. The organically warm production brings out the underlying calm tension that hints towards a sense of clarity emerging through the haze of grief.
For this release, Melting Reeds have honed their songwriting around the idea of contrast; a duality that mirrors the messy nature of the human condition. Even without the lyrics, that emotional refraction would be perfectly understood due to Lausanne duo’s sonic precision.
