Following on from the stirring soul-rock single ‘Not Good For Me’, Ireland’s One Flew Over (Irene Ní Chuinn and Martin Quinn) continue their upward stride with ‘Eyes Open’. This track is another unique take on indie-rock, with the high drama of Baroque pop and a soulfulness that’s becoming something of a signature for the duo. Once again there’s an undeniable chemistry between Ní Chuinn‘s commanding vocals and Quinn’s skilled musicianship, which together pulls out an aura of vintage cinema where the impossible becomes real.
Here, our eyes (and ears) are firmly fixed on the gripping narrative that One Flew Over adroitly unpacks throughout ‘Eyes Open’. It follows a protagonist waking from the glow of infatuation, realizing the love they clung to was built on illusion. Beneath the Florence Welch-esque crescendos are the lingering shadows of painful revelation, bittersweet nostalgia and fear of the unknown. It’s such a carefully balanced track, both sonically and lyrically, that makes this tale of heartbreak feel so utterly genuine.
However, a broken heart is but one side of the story. Like scales being lifted from one’s eyes, the end of a fraudulent relationship is also another chance at freedom. Through bold drums and soaring guitars, liberation is brought to life, while elegant strings and glistening keys hint towards a glimpse of hope up ahead. ‘Eyes Open’ is a sophisticated display of the ebb and flow of love, loss, heartbreak and dreams.
With a debut album set for early 2026, the two releases we’ve already heard signal the arrival of what’s sure to be a landmark album for One Flew Over.
