In his latest single ‘Separate Ways‘, Norwegian singer-songwriter Kristian Grostad ruminates on the growing division and looming oppression present in our modern society. This is a powerfully introspective introduction to this artist’s repertoire where he combines social justice and activism with scintillating pop-rock sounds.
Drawing on influences from major bands like The National, Frightened Rabbit and Death Cab for Cutie, Grostad brings his own personal touch to these anthemic sonic motifs. This ensures that ‘Seperate Ways’ is far from a pretentious lecture, instead it’s a sincere message straight from the heart.
As he explains, “In many ways, it’s a kind of message to myself and to future generations — a reminder not to let indifference or laziness win over determination and the power of standing up for what you believe in. It doesn’t help to sit on the fence and wait for change, or for things to happen on their own. The song was written during a time of reflection — both about changes in my own life and in the world in general — with new beginnings (and endings). It’s about facing those moments with honesty toward yourself, and staying true to what you believe in and what drives you.”
Addressing both the present and future, Grostad‘s voice is direct and empathetic, wrapped in a mid-tempo framework that gradually unloads the emotional weight at the core of ‘Seperate Ways’. The softer verses are contrasted by a shoegaze-laced bridge with heavy guitars and tight percussion revealing a patient catharsis.
This poignant track is also the first glimpse of Kristian Grostad‘s upcoming album, set for release in 2026. It promises to be a bold new chapter for this songwriter that’s steeped in personal growth, self-interrogation and a quiet bravery.
