‘Get Me Far’ is Alex Ergas‘ blissfully carefree ode to escapism, travel, adventure and new experiences, with hidden depth at its core. It’s a brilliant return for this Atlanta-based artist who has been on a four-year hiatus, but unlike many comeback tracks which reflect on the break, there’s a forward-facing energy to Ergas‘ new single.
Although the original version appeared on TikTok in 2021, it’s been shaped and re-shaped by four different studios, the pressure of academic deadlines and the influences of his classmates and fellow musicians. In this way, the final product (completed with Evan Dangerfield’s mix and Dan Millice’s mastering) feels like a living and breathing iteration of Ergas‘ life right now.
Structurally, this single moves from a quiet intimacy to expansive catharsis that follows the songwriter’s journey into a world of wanderlust. It opens with a laidback bass line that leads listeners into waves of light phased guitars and subtle reverb, which sets the tone for Ergas‘ soft and searching vocals. Poetic lines like “watch the sky, so starry, see my breath, find my peace” activate a momentary calm away from life’s chaos, particularly the ups and downs of love.
As ‘Get Me Far’ progresses, the track moves on from that introspective quiet to evolve into a space of tension, emotional overwhelm and contradiction. The guitars and rhythms accelerate as Ergas embraces his feelings, “I’m here for you, I’m deep for you,” with the realisation that he can’t run away from the truth forever. It’s a reminder that while there’s a place for escapism, it must also be balanced by a grounded authenticity.
Growing from a bedroom songwriter to collaborative artist, Alex Ergas comes into his own with ‘Get Me Far’, which is also a promising glimpse into the long-awaited Something Good EP.
