Powers of the Monk drifts through ‘Sleepy Fields’

Bringing some much needed calm and tranquility after the emotional exhaustion of the holidays is returning duo Powers of the Monk and their latest ear-gem ‘Sleepy Fields’. With its soothing dream-pop meets indie-folk aesthetic, listening to this song is like strolling through long grass with the poppies swaying in the breeze.

There’s a subtle psychedelic atmosphere hovering throughout this track, transporting us to the ’70s “flower power” days. Although it’s tempting to look back at previous decades with rose (or should we say, poppy) tinted glasses, we can also learn a few things, particularly that respect and connection with nature which is something many of us are losing in our modern world. Taking inspiration from the natural world, Powers of the Monk weave together these organic, flowing and analog textures.

David S. Monk and CasSondra Powers’ vocals enter the scene with an understated sincerity and breathy cool, while he delivers lines that ponder on life and destiny, like “when the world stops spinning, where will we be?” It’s a question that doesn’t need to be answered, as like the soft strings and undemanding percussion, these thoughts simply linger on.

On ‘Sleepy Fields’, Powers of the Monk opt for low-end touches and pastoral motifs over obvious hooks and big crescendos. It’s about appreciating the small things, from the way the light moves at dusk to the undulating waves of grass in the wind. Let’s all take a collective breath and sink into the soothing serenity of this special single.
