Nick Boeder‘s single ‘Your Shadowed Doubts’ is the sound of being at a cross-roads. Written shortly after the Colorado musician’s move from Fort Collins to Boulder, this track represents change, healing and learning to be comfortable with yourself. Not only is this song about a new setting, but it’s also about a new life as Boeder recovered from a recent break-up.
The very first line, “time alone in this mountainside”, instantly brings to mind Boulder’s rocky landscape and the possibilities for solitude in nature. That sense of healthy isolation comes through in the track’s simple-yet-effective two-chord construction, pivoting from B minor and D in a steady pattern, with the equally stable percussion. Although written in seclusion, Boeder‘s rhythmically driven piece was brought into this final version by producer Chris Beeble.
This minimalist dream-pop atmosphere means that much of our focus is drawn to Boeder‘s introspective lyrics which are soaked in bittersweet nostalgia for what once was. Underneath the artist’s placid vocal performance are intermittent backing vocals, which bring to mind his ex-paramour, who are going through their own process of heartache. It’s that empathetic thread that really takes ‘Your Shadowed Doubts’ beyond a one-dimensional narrative and into something deeper and more profound.
