Nothing’s ever truly done, until you say it is. You can keep fighting, keep trying, keep pushing through. This is the surprising sentiment behind Lisbon-based Ashley Ray Simon’s quietly powerful indie-folk single ‘Vaya Con Dios’, which was originally released under another project back in 2019. Evidently, this track holds a special place in Simon‘s songwriting catalogue, so much so that it has found its way into his new EP, How Well Do You Know This Place.
Inspired by a storm at sea, with all its unbridled force, unpredictable nature and ability to mercilessly destroy, this song embraces surrender. This elemental starting point has been transformed into something more tranquil and reflected through Simon‘s songwriting, like the inevitable calm after a storm. Weathered yet tender strings sway like a gentle breeze, as a steady tempo propels the artist’s warm vocals along.
Recorded live and analogue with producer Rohin Brown, it’s clear that pains have been taken to retain the organic, indie-folk feeling that lends itself so well to a sense of emotional openness. ‘Vaya Con Dios’ isn’t about polished or shiny perfection, instead it’s about capturing the raw essence of a moment. In doing so, Ashley Ray Simon has crafted something deeply personal, yet this vulnerability brings a special kind of connection with the listener. This is timeless songwriting at its best.
