Newcastle’s latest kids on the block Wild Spelks deliver a healthy dose of indie-rock nostalgia and subtle post-punk rebellion through their new single ‘305’. As we tread further into 2026, it’s this energy that we so dearly need to keep our heads above the water. It’s packed with a mid-2010s optimism that we can’t get enough of, along the lines of The Kooks, The Wombats and The Strokes. Yet, this band brings their own efficacious personalities to their sound; this isn’t copy and paste, this is authenticity.
The little sampled clip at the start of the track immediately connects Wild Spelks‘ vibrant songwriting with the idea of a youthful and playful canine friend. For us, dogs are pure joy and that’s what you get listening to ‘305’ as well. It hits all those sweet spots with catchy hooks, extroverted guitars and jumping percussion. We can really imagine how fun this track would be in a live setting.
What really makes this track land for us is that it’s not just hope and idealism for the sake of it, this is about battling through burnout through the restorative power of music. Sure, a good track isn’t the solution for everything, but it really does help. We’re sure that all of you can think of at least one time when a track has lifted your spirits, provided solace or given you a safe space for catharsis. In ‘305’, it’s that chorus with unrestrained vocals, pop-minded melodies and plenty of indie grit that is sure to snap any listener out of their funk, even if it’s just for a little while.
With a growing fanbase and industry speculation mounting by the day, Wild Spelks is a one-to-watch band this year.
