Hailing from the north-east town of Hartlepool, four-piece Crescent is a unique tour-de-force who are bringing old-school psychedelic vibes to England’s coastal region. They’ve recently released an invigorating AA single with Shy Bairn Records, which is an ambitious debut that doesn’t shout for attention, but is rather quietly confident. Titles ‘Milogather’ and delivered in two parts, this double-sided single is a slow-burning foray into hallucinogenic melodies, soulful vocals, extroverted guitars and dynamic percussion. With so much to talk about here, let’s dissect each A-side.
‘Milogather Part 1’ is a down-to-earth and groove-led affair that gradually wades further and further into the rapturous waters of emotion. Blues-tinged guitar refrains dance light-heatedly around punching drums, while a powerful lead vocal rises in assertiveness with each passing moment. For some bands, a five minute track might have a lot of filler, but for Crescent, every choice here is purposeful and determined.
‘Milogather Part 2’ ups the ante yet again by expanding those ideas from part one into an even more sprawling and luxurious seven minutes. Once again, the pace is unhurried as the band lock into those woozy, spiralling psychedelic textures. After the halfway point, that reflective atmosphere bursts out into explosive colour, where the vocals grow into a cathartic wail, the guitars clash with themselves and the bassline hits a deeper groove.
With this debut, it’s clear that Crescent hasn’t set out to make music for instant gratification, instead this is a sound that’s worth the wait.
