‘Tucker’s Having a Baby’ is the scrappy, indie-rock introduction to French Dogs

There’s nothing that quite hits the spot like an energetically charged slice of British indie-rock. For us, it’s such a nostalgic genre and it’s tracks like ‘Tucker’s Having a Baby’ from London outfit French Dogs that really give us that sense of mid-00s hedonism that formed so much of our music tastes. We’re clearly not alone in this connection as the single has already been doing the rounds on the radio and no doubt it’s finding a home on listeners’ go-to playlists.

What makes ‘Tucker’s Having a Baby’ such an instantly addictive listen is the live show energy that they pour into every second of those three minutes. There’s so much momentum built up across the track, yet it doesn’t unwind into pure chaos, rather French Dogs keep ahold of the reins, if only just. The jittery percussion, serrated guitars and swaggering melodies bring to mind intoxicated late nights and bleary-eyed mornings, yet the song’s theme hints at a very different phase in life.

All of that high-velocity escapism runs in stark contrast to the realisation that all of your friends are growing up without you. All of a sudden, there are marriages, mortgages and children, and you’re feeling left behind. French Dogs turn that existential dread into relatable catharsis. This point is also driven home by the tongue-in-cheek music video, which warps a baby shower into a visual representation of disorder and disarray.

‘Tucker’s Having a Baby’ is a powerful introduction to French Dogs and a tempting insight into their forthcoming debut album.
