Having recently delivered their third single in the space of two years, it’s no surprise that Talking Horses is currently a band flying under the radar. However, we have a feeling that won’t be the case for too much longer. This Birmingham trio have been at the grindstone and their latest release ‘These Days’ is just a taste of what they have in store for listeners. It’s certainly not a quiet way to restart the engine either.
From the first few seconds, ‘These Days’ ignites a spark with driving guitars and an assertive rhythm section. Punctuated by bold horns, the soundscape feels so much more expansive and light-hearted than we’d typically expect from a British indie-rock track. Produced by Matt Terry (VADA Studios), it’s refreshing to hear such a swaggering mix that reminds us of a mid-2010s optimism.
For all of the feel-good aesthetics and nostalgic elements that define this single, the lyrics hint towards much more present concerns. One such line, “these days, I’ve been watching all the colours start to fade, there’s something in the escape, helps me as I stay,” reveals the contrast between dim reality and vibrant fantasy. For so many of us, that outlet to offset daily mundanity is music, which naturally applies to Talking Horses as well.
Whatever you’re escaping from, we’re sure that you’ll find some solace in the anthemic comeback that is ‘These Days’.
