The Trusted return with earnest indie-rock anthem ‘Spin’

One of our indie-rock mainstays over the years has been The Trusted, a Southend-on-Sea four-piece who know how to turn out a tune. Their first treat of the year is ‘Spin’, which is a restless, feel-good and full-hearted single that meets the high bar that this band has set for us already. From the very start, you can’t help but be swept up in the upbeat percussion and tight grooves that’ll have any listeners bopping their head from start to finish. Set against that svelte rhythm section are addictive jangle-pop guitars and a fresh, unfiltered voice.

For all it’s hook-driven pop sensibilities and light indie-rock playfulness, ‘Spin’ holds a deeper truth. Beneath the bright chords and punchy tempo, a nervous energy is bubbling up; it’s that sense of wanting to be seen and heard. The lyrics tap into a desperate yet utterly human need to matter to someone else and, one hopes, for them to matter to you too. As lead vocalist Tom Cunningham sings, “I wanna be your real thing, I wanna make you spin.”

With hints to opera and fairgrounds, it also seems that this is a personal plea for a band who have been consistently pushing forward in the UK’s indie scene. With the chorus in particular, this band reaches out to their listeners with a fearless vulnerability. The Trusted aren’t about acting cool and keeping their distance, they know that their fanbase is essential to their very reason for being.

Earnest, determined and disarmingly honest, ‘Spin’ is The Trusted at their most authentic to date.
