Martin Kuiper’s soft rock ballad ‘She’s A Story’ exposes the truth

Hailing from the picturesque Dutch village of Ruurlo, Martin Kuiper is a songwriter whose style can swing from high-octane riffs through to grounded ballads. The latter of which applies to his latest single ‘She’s A Story’, which is a soft paced trip down nostalgia lane. Leaning into honest storytelling, simple melodies and muted alt-rock motifs, this track gives Kuiper plenty of room to unpack the hectic mix of emotions that still cling to the memory of a former relationship.

As the artist himself explains, “I experienced the story up close. It’s about a relationship with someone who ultimately turns out not to be who you initially thought.”

Kuiper doesn’t admit whether this ‘She’s A Story’ is lifted from his own life, but it’s clear that this deception touched him deeply. For as much as his vocal tempo is measured, it also possesses a bruised vulnerability, whether that’s in the restrained verses or bluesy Bowie-esque crescendos.

Alongside his dynamic vocal performance are rich layers of americana strings, fire-singed riffs, a strutting bass line and anthemic percussion. All of this is tied together by a complementary production, which was finessed in collaboration with Henk Wesselink and Ymte Koekkoek.

‘She’s A Story’ is very much a sign of things to come from Martin Kuiper‘s forthcoming record, Prison Of Modesty.
