Annabel Allum has risen to the top of many people’s playlists this year thanks to her captivating presence, signature vocals and careful blend between pop, indie and post-punk-revival.
Recently, Allum shared a delicate-yet-gritty cover of Gossip’s ‘Standing In The Way of Control’, the first from her Lockdown Sessions. We now have the second cover song of the year and it’s a goodie. Picking up the iconic ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ from The Cure, Annabel Allum uses this mainstay rock single to portray her compassion for the men in her life, using that sweet slacker-pop style to say “it’s okay if you wanna cry, you know?”
Speaking further on these key relationships, the musician shares:
“I think a lot about the male/masc presenting humans in my life. People construe feminism to be an idea that women deserve more than men, but it couldn’t be further from the truth for me. Watching the men in my life struggle to share their emotion because of societies implication that it’s weak- well point blank it’s wrong. I’ve watched my men suffer, I’ve watched them depressed, and I’ve watched them deteriorate on the drunken nights home when they can finally say how they’re really feeling.”
