For the majority, trying to break into a creative industry is not an easy path. Oftentimes people have to dedicate any spare time they might have to their passion, while the rest of their time is put towards working a day job or studying. And so, we’re sure that many of you lovely readers will relate to the story at the heart of Carbon Memory‘s single ‘Rumours’.
From their upcoming EP, the Canadian four-piece have released a video for this single to further drive home its message. As the band explain:
“The music video reflects on the compromising realities of splitting our daily lives between a full-time job in a cold corporate environment and the need to be creative. The video cycles through a series of individuals experiencing corporate burnout and features scenes of corporate puppetry, boardroom intimidations, a dreary commute, delirious meltdowns and a corporate cover up that goes up in flames.”
We’re particularly struck by those all-too-familiar vacant expressions of the two protagonists and the dreary ending paired with the song’s warped wind-down. Clearly, this band aren’t afraid to shy away from harsh realities.
On the flipside, Carbon Memory subvert the dividing force of the corporate world by displaying their egalitarian approach to music. You can hear the individual elements of the instrumentation, consisting largely of piano, vocals and ambient synths. The band recall how this song evolve thanks to their collaborative attitude:
“This was the song that benefitted the most from those collaborative sessions. Having the
band in one room allowed us to try out different ideas quickly and jam. It wasn’t long before our drummer suggested adding drums and bass, which really brought out an old and dusty swagger.”
If you’ve enjoyed ‘Rumours’, then we heartily recommend keeping a ear out for Carbon Memory‘s Tourist EP, out on October 27th.
You can find ‘Rumours’ in our new Indie Rockers playlist, so please give that a like and share.
