Adam Mohamed is one of the most essential artists to know from Ireland’s burgeoning rap and spoken word scene. Based in the Ballymun area of Dublin, this Sudanese-Irish creative first broke through in early 2021 with a game-changing spoken word piece called ‘Untitled’, which explored themes of growing up mixed race and mixed religion in working class Dublin. Since then, he’s been getting more entrenched in the city’s creative world and ‘Stuck in Traffic’ is the second official single from this time.
It’s a woozy mix of R&B and rap, with only soft and fluid lines between Mohamed‘s carefully chosen words and minimalistic beatwork. While distinctly Irish in style, this piece of melodic hip-hop can be related to by anyone, regardless of your identity, because it’s all about appreciating the life you’ve got even in the most inconvenient of situations.
Speaking about the moment of enlightenment that inspired this reflective new music, Mohamed recalls:
“I was in the car driving along the coast with my girl and son in the back. We got stuck in a long queue of traffic. I took a glance in the rear-view mirror and thought to myself ‘this isn’t too bad’. Once you have the right people around you everything else will be good. The song came to me straight away, naturally. I didn’t have to do too much.”
